8th St. School

Gunnison Historic School House Architecture: A Testament to Preserving History

This 1870s single room school house preservation and rehabilitation project represents an example of collaborative success in saving and reviving an important part of local history undertaken by J Reeser Architect, LLC in Gunnison, Colorado. Joint efforts and contributions with the non-profit ownership, History Colorado’s State Historic Fund, as well as local and regional talented tradespeople were key to the success of this priceless local building. This project exemplifies the importance of historic preservation and rehabilitation in maintaining the cultural and architectural heritage of a community.

Historic preservation is crucial not only for maintaining the aesthetic and historical value of buildings but also for keeping alive the stories and history they embody. Built as the City’s first public school under commission from one of the founding fathers, the building endured many uses and abandonment prior to this project. The 8th Street School has been carefully assessed, documented, preserved and rehabilitated to ensure that it continues to tell its story to future generations, all while serving a functional role as an activity space for the Gunnison Mentors programs and for use as a community center.

This project was funded by History Colorado’s State Historic Fund grants and guided by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Preservation and Rehabilitation, ensuring every modification and restoration effort was sensitively handled to maintain the building’s original character. Our team, including SOI-qualified professionals, conducted an in-depth Historic Structure Assessment, existing conditions documentation, and code evaluations to make informed decisions that respect and reflect the building’s past in its modern use. The work developed into full construction documents for a multi-phase construction project funded by State Historic Fund grants and the non-profit ownership’s fundraising efforts.

The 8th Street School is now a model of how historical buildings can be adapted for contemporary use without losing their historical essence, making it a cornerstone of the community and a bridge to its past.
